When a dog is enrolled in the Boarding Program, they receive highly personalized care 24/7. As all dog’s needs are unique, everything from food, to walks, to play time and training, is carefully scheduled and monitored. Frequent reviews during the process help tailor the program even further. To keep the training process both productive and fun, dogs are trained on a work-rest cycle: each 15 minute training interval is followed by a break. Because a large part of positive reinforcement comes from the bond between trainer and dog, affectionate interaction and play are absolutely necessary. In fact, they're the key to effective training. Once the dog has graduated the Boarding Program, the family is brought in, on a private lesson basis, to learn how to work and communicate with their dog and how to maintain positive behaviors in the home. The lessons continue until everyone in the family is comfortable handling the dog.
Olde Towne School for Dogs | Alexandria, VA
Because no two dogs are alike, every training program is individually tailored to your dog’s unique personality and your unique goals. Different breeds have been bred for different purposes for thousands of years. This has produced dogs with reliable physical and behavioral traits, but some of those personality “quirks” can develop into problems. In today’s society it is critical that all dogs are well-behaved canine citizens, and this is one of the primary goals of the training program. Shelly’s knowledgeable staff has the experience to know the behavioral differences between a Retriever and a Terrier, and teach both of them in a manner that the dog can understand. Rescue dogs and mixed breeds are evaluated with the same experienced eye – taking into consideration their history and unique temperament characteristics. Boarding School is a highly customized, personal training program, allowing our team to carefully identify and address behavioral issues.

We will be happy to respond to your questions and comments, so please contact us via e-mail, telephone or feel free to come by. Dogs are trained for a minimum of 30 minutes three times a day, four days a week for three weeks. Your dog will attend school Tuesday through Friday. Owners receive three one-hour private sessions to see their dog's progress and learn how to use what their dog has learned. After the first lesson you are an active participant in the program with your dog. Handling lessons are usually given at the end of each week the dog is in school. Exercises covered in our basic course include heel and sit automatically when you stop, sit-stay, down-stay, come when called and down from a distance. Your dog will work on both a six foot and fifteen foot leash and is expected to work around distractions such as other dogs, traffic, squirrels and joggers. We also teach you how to use your training tools to work with problems such as barking, jumping, digging or destructive behavior. All graduates receive a diploma and an "honor student" bumper sticker. We work with several excellent dog taxi services if your dog requires transportation. Day School is in session from 9 am to 4 pm but dogs are welcome to arrive as early as 7:30 am and can be picked up as late as 7:00 pm.
