Have you ever thought about why some people are not keen to adopt a black dog or cat? This is a problem that we come across every day and that we find heartbreaking.

So does “Black Dog and Cat Syndrome” really exist, or is it just another myth?

Black is indeed the most common color for both dogs and cats entering shelters, she said. It’s probably not because people are quick to abandon them, though, but rather because “the genes that are responsible for black coat color are dominant genes, and therefore one may assume there are more black cats in the general population,” Weiss explained in an email to Science of Us. So because there are more black cats in shelters, it does seem like they are more difficult to adopt out. “But in fact, in our data set we found more black cats were adopted compared to any other color,” shesaid.

There are numerous myths about black cats and dogs: are bad luck. Black dogs are omens of death. Eventually, the bulldog frightens the kitten into giving up the whistle, and (after a couple of false starts) he gains the upper hand on the black cat by luring him under a large paint brush, turning him white and rendering his bad luck powers useless. However, the white kitten saves the day by painting herself black and crossing the bulldog's path. The bulldog is conked by a falling anvil, and ends up swallowing the whistle, triggering a case of the , each one of which causes the whistle to go off. As a result, all manner of huge objects plummet from the sky (ranging from a kitchen sink all the way to a battleship), causing the bulldog to flee in terror. The cartoon ends with the formerly-black cat giving the kitten his bowler hat as a show of gratitude.

The bulldog revives, and tries multiple times to attack the kitten, but every attempt is foiled in the same way: the kitten blows the whistle, the black cat crosses the bulldog's path regardless of circumstances, and the dog is pummeled by various objects falling from the sky, including a cash register, a piano, and a set of (not to mention the horse they belong to).

At Chicago's Anti-Cruelty Society, we find one of those stories that's very hard to understand. It's about black dogs. Nice black dogs. And, black cats, nice black cats. There are no statistics showing how many black cats and dogs go un-adopted because of their color, but those in the business say the black cat and dog syndrome is very real. But, no matter how nice they are, when these animals end up in shelters, many of them experience something called "black cat and black dog syndrome." Black cat, black cat's gone
Gone for good, gone for long
Don't believe that he left me alone
And I hope he don't come home

Lookin' back, the black past
Trust him once, lost my map
Trust again to save my bones
And I never made it back

(Chorus)

Never had anything
(?) and I never win
Lost my only love, never get her back
There's a black cat on my back

(Chorus)

Beg for mercy, layin' low
Down where the poor dogs go
Lick my wounds, when I go home
Death is spiralin' down
Death is low

(Chorus)

Every day, every hour
Another baby's born
Gonna hang my head, dry and blind
'Til the black cat drags it home

(Chorus)

Beg for mercy, I'm layin' low
Down where the poor dogs go
Lick my wounds, when I grow old
The sun is down and gone
The sun is down
The sun is down and gone
The sun is down
The sun is down and gone
The sun is down
The sun is down and gone

Black cat

The sun is down and gone

Hope he don't come home
I hope he don't come home
I hope he don't come home
